Cardiff Market Service Design Programme 2019

Cardiff market is a Victorian indoor market (built in 1891) located in the heart of Cardiff’s city centre. The market is home to over 60 market businesses, who together offer a large variety of fresh produce, cooked foods, traditional crafts, and services.

PDR has been working with Cardiff market traders in recent months in order to introduce them to service design and help them understand how it can offer value to their business.

In response to early engagement with market traders, PDR has developed a two-phase programme that will run throughout 2019. The programme is a free service open to all market traders.

The first phase of the programme will run for three months and consist of a short service design project that will explore how we might improve the experience of the market for customers and market traders.

Phase one aims to:

  1. Give market traders the opportunity to have their say on the current challenges in the market and potential opportunities in moving forward;
  2. Improve collaboration between traders and assist in developing a collective purpose;
  3. rovide a better understanding of what service design is, how it can offer them value, and in turn, increase their desire to engage with the remainder of the programme.

Phase two of the programme will run for six months and will support interested market traders in using service design to add value to their business. This support service will be delivered in the form of group workshops and one to one mentoring sessions.

We hope to use the experience gained from the project and in working individually with business, to create design tools and resources that traders can use on a regular basis.

Keep updated on our progress and what we learn in the coming months when we will explore the future of Cardiff Market.
